JD McGeown Achieves ISO 19650 Certification for BIM Information Management
JD McGeown Ltd is pleased to announce that the company has achieved certification to ISO 19650, the international standard for managing information over the whole life cycle of a built asset using Building Information Modelling (BIM).
The certification, awarded by NSAI following a formal audit process, covers JD McGeown’s role as an appointed party delivering mechanical and electrical services design and consulting.
What ISO 19650 means
ISO 19650 sets out how project information should be specified, produced, checked, approved and delivered — so that everyone working on a project is drawing from a single, reliable source of truth. Rather than information being scattered across inboxes, revisions and local drives, it is managed through a structured Common Data Environment with clear naming, status and approval controls at every stage.
For a building services contractor, that discipline matters. Electrical and mechanical services are among the most coordination-intensive elements of any building. Getting the information right — the correct revision, issued at the right time, to the right people is what prevents clashes on site, avoids abortive work and keeps programmes on track.
What it means for our clients
Certification gives our clients independent, third-party assurance that:
- Information is delivered to a defined standard. Our processes for producing, reviewing and issuing design information are documented, audited and consistently applied.
- We can respond properly to BIM Execution Plans and Exchange Information Requirements. Where a client or lead appointed party sets information requirements, we have the systems in place to meet them from day one.
- Coordination is built in, not bolted on. Federated model coordination and structured drawing control reduce the risk of late-stage clashes between services and other disciplines.
- Security-minded information management is addressed. Our approach reflects the requirements of ISO 19650-5, which is increasingly relevant to work on sensitive and public sector estates.
Public sector clients across Northern Ireland and beyond now routinely specify BIM capability within their procurement requirements. This certification confirms formally what our project teams already deliver in practice.
The work behind it
Achieving certification involved a structured implementation programme across the business — reviewing and revising quality procedures, establishing information management responsibilities, developing a project information risk register, and training staff on the standard’s terminology and workflows.
