PROJECT DESCRIPTION:

JD MCGEOWN were appointed contractors on the refurbishment of the Old Physics Building at QUB as part of a major capital spend programme.

This redevelopment was the first phase of a project to consolidate and integrate the Schools of Mathematics and Physics including the development of a Mathematics and Physics Teaching Centre in the current Postgraduate Student Centre and the upgrading of accommodation in the New Physics.

This project consisted of the strip out, part demolition and refurbishment of a four storey listed building located in the heart of Queens University’s main campus. The building has new state of the art mechanical and electrical systems. The building fabric was enhanced by way of total floor by floor reconfiguration to provide cellular double and multi occupancy suites. Particular emphasis was placed on the retention of existing components such as original oak flooring and exposed wooden structural trusses. New joinery throughout the complete building along with new welfare and kitchen facilities completed the internal refurbishment of the project. This project was completed and handover in two phases with the first being the total refurbishment of the Emeleus Lecture theatre.
